This is a sliver out of my to-be-published Clear Vision.
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good
for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose .Romans 8:28 NASB
Here is an example of a speedy answer to that “prove that Your Word is true” prayer.
One Christmas Eve we were headed out to share a blessed evening with dear friends Kyle and Wendy Knight who lived 20 minutes away. Our children were in the backseat. Neil backed the old car out of our driveway and said, “God is good!” As he said those words we heard a crash. Neil stopped, got out, and examined the vehicle he had hit. Behind him was a crushed door of a brand new top-of-the-line Cadillac belonging to a guest of the irascible, bad-tempered homeowner who lived across the street. We all got out of our car, knocked on the door, and waited. The neighbor, already scowling, opened the door.
“We just hit a car in front of your house.”
Rage twisted the neighbor’s face as he started screaming.
“That’s my mother’s brand new car, you”, and he began hurling profanity at us. Hearing the shouts, the other rage-filled siblings gathered round, each one screaming insults at us. We apologized, walked up to where our neighbor’s mother was seated, told her what we did and gave her our phone number and the name and phone number of our insurance company. We got back into our car and continued to drive to our friends’ home.
As we drove I said, “God, according to Romans 8:28 You cause all things to work together for good for those who love you and are called according to Your purpose.” Lord, please prove Your Word! Please cause good to come out of this!” I wasn’t saying, “Prove it!” like a kid on the playground hearing another kid say he had a goat in his yard. This kind of proof is the word used in Mal 3:10 “Bring the tithes into the storehouse and prove me in this…. Lord, please prove Your Word! Please cause good to come out of this!” He is saying, “Watch how I will do what I say I will do.” It’s the only time that I believe that God said, “Just do it and prove me—let me show you that I mean what I say.”
Maybe I take things to extremes and I have sat under several different kinds of doctrines, but I have pulled out what I needed to get through and I have to say that I am very grateful for every shred of faith that I have exacted from each teaching.
The next morning as I was throwing some laundry into the washing machine the phone rang. It was the neighbor’s mother, the owner of the Cadillac.
“May I come over? “ I said that of course she could and I prepared to meet with the woman whose prize car we had ruined the night before. She walked in and got to the point.
“Cheryl, I want to know your God. I have never seen any two people behave as you did in the face of so much hatred. Will you pray for me?”
Oh Yes! Oh Yes! God confirmed His Word quickly for me, perhaps in His mercy. But we can always call upon Him to prove His Word. I have found out over and over and over again that God loves the challenge of proving His Word, standing behind His Word as we watch it come to pass.
How did she know we were Christians? We were pretty obvious in our faith and perhaps the son had told her about our faith. Or perhaps she remembered my ministering to them when their grandchild, the neighbor’s small boy, had drowned in a classmate’s pool. All I know is that she just came straight out and said she wanted to know my God. That was the best ‘proof that God would turn a horrible situation to good’ that I could ever have hoped for! To lead someone into faith in Jesus Christ!
